Perhaps one of Bruton Music’s all-out funkiest collections, Light My Fire contains selections from the Bruton Music All-Stars: Alan Hawkshaw, Steve Gray, Frank Ricotti (with Les Hurdle), and a couple more. Between Hawkshaw and Gray alone, this collection burns brighter than many others; Hawkshaw’s “Hawkwind and Fire” evokes Bob James-esque brass and woodwinds to a funky beat, and on the other end of the spectrum, the somewhat ahead-of-its-time “Fuel Ejection” is a fast-paced exercise in clavinet, synthesizer, and electric pianos that should not be missed. Gray’s “Wonder Groove” is named for Stevie Wonder (so states the back cover), yet due to the choice of keyboards used, it has a way of sounding more like Gino Vannelli’s Stevie-inspired instrumental backing. The title track, also supplied by Steve Gray, is enough to send one out of one’s seat, with its surprising 1970s bass-and-brass funk. Les Hurdle and Frank Ricotti’s Barry White-esque “Move On” also saw time on BRL 3 Advanced Technology (also published in 1978), but is much more appropriately placed in this collection. Keith Mansfield’s sublime “Blockbuster” seeks to anchor the second side of this record, yet his synth-heavy Moroder-styled disco “Disco Dynamite” almost threatens to take it off the rails. Gray takes it home with “Reach Out”, a pleasant “farewell” tune.
