The first in Bruton Music’s BRI series, published in 1978, has an “outer space” theme; there is a generous use of synthesizers on many tracks and even some sample and hold/sequencer fun on some tracks (“Terrestial Fanfare”, “Wave-Forms”). Alan Hawkshaw, the ever-dynamic composer-for-hire handles the entirety of Side A, and the first 2 tracks of Side B (including the can’t miss “Speed Of Sound”, which bears more than just a resemblance to his composition “Fuel Injection” from BRH 5 Light My Fire, published the same year). Steve Gray’s offerings are a stark contrast from the synthesized and spacey sounds offered by Hawkshaw — titles like “The Rise and Fall of Zirkon” might make you think that you’re going to hear a bunch of boops and bleeps, but what you get is a relaxing, slow-paced number lead by acoustic guitar. The tag team of Les Hurdle and Frank Ricotti offer three dark and funky (but dreadfully brief) numbers, including the bass-driven “Dank”. The digital transfer for much of this record was rather difficult, given the condition of the source record, however most of the best tracks were not marred in the process.
