Jacques Thollot - Cinq Hops (1978)

ATTENTION, MASTERPIECE !!

ELISE ROSS, singing
FRANÇOIS Jeanneau, soprano saxophone, flute
MICHEL Grailler, clavinet, piano, percussion
FRANÇOIS Couturier, keyboards
JEAN-PAUL Celea, bass
JACQUES THOLLOT, drums, percussion, keyboards

First impressions are scrambling to describe this strange album from 1978, the fourth drummer Jacques Thollot. At his side, the cream of jazz hexagonal (Celea, Couturier, Jeanneau and the late Michel Graillier), but also the American soprano Elise Ross with his voice just give a classic touch to the whole mystique.
Disc music strange as such,
Five Hops immediate appeal.

Jacques Thollot is "drummer" who at the outbreak of free jazz in the sixties in France, had shattered the extent and tempo for an exhilarating excess of freedom. Released in 1978, Five Hops, his fourth album, considered by experts as the best offers thirteen pieces of chamber music, from jazz-rock universe, classic and contemporary. Intriquant in the most classical influences with compositions squinting side of jazz-rock and alternating very written with bold miniatures such as "Rush," "Seven" and plays "Nine times" Jacques Thollot broke a ride pocus to surprise the listener without losing it. When he's not behind his drums, his music transports us to the beginning of twentieth century when French composers of that time would have discovered that it takes technology to transform their ideas. Introducing "On the Mountain (For Michele)" with the clear voice of Elise Ross, but "A certain light Tours" are the most touching examples. Sticks in hand, the composer is a leader, brilliantly supports its troops, takes on more wild rhythms. Soprano voice does not drop, and takes part in this unashamedly manly fight "Aprelude" centerpiece of the album is a perfect illustration. Summing up in eight minutes the brilliant alchemy of this record song to the soloists seem to take a little more freedom with the very leader of the written music is a gem. (Web source)

One of my best musical emotions and acquisitions vinylistiques,
A fascinating and taking hard as we have little opportunity to hear.
"Five Hops" by Jacques Thollot 38 minutes of pure bohneur!
Happy curious ears, it is here and now on this blog,
