Since the copy of this record circulating around the Internet has a rather unfortunate skip in one of the better tracks in this collection, John Cameron’s “Portrait 2″, I hunted this one down; the overall theme of this Bruton set seems to be much more dark, brooding, and suspenseful, especially on Side B (which starts with the title track, listed above). There isn’t any of the uptempo romps or even much of the relaxing fare one might find on other Bruton collections; the initial impression upon hearing this set is one of watching a late 1970s “Movie Of The Week” produced by Lorimar. Why Lorimar? As moody as this set can get, as it comes to the close, one almost expects to hear that signature Jack Eliot/Allyn Ferguson-penned Fender Rhodes piano flourish that was Lorimar’s closing ident theme in that period. The hero of this particular set is certainly John Carpenter, whose “Satin” and “Portrait” pieces stand outside his usual fare. The piano/saxophone combination on the former immediately draws the listener in. The latter’s woodwind sounds provide a nice break from the “murder on the horizon” music that comprises the majority of this set. Said music is anything but dull, in fact, the two “Eye Opener” pieces that end the first side are rather aptly named.
